How do we price our plants?

The main factor that matters when we decide how to price our plants is the pot size. This is simply due to the fact that when you’re dealing with nursery plants, it’s all about the roots. The bigger the pot, the larger the root ball of the plant, which means the plant will start out more established and dominant once planted. When pricing our shrubs and especially trees, the height of the plant is also an important factor to determine price. Lastly, the demand or popularity of a particular plant also determines price, with some plants being more expensive or cheap due to their perceived aesthetic value in the market.

Generally, an estimate of our typical pricing is as follows:

  • Perennials - We typically sell perennials in either Quart Pots ranging from $3 to $7 each, or in Gallon Pots from $8 to $15 each

  • Trees & Shrubs - The smallest sized ones we typically sell are in Gallon Pots between 0.5 and 2 feet tall ranging from $8 to $15 each. From there we sell taller ones in larger pots that go up with price from there, typically around $10 per foot of height.

  • Houseplants - We sell various sizes ranging from small starter plants or rooted cuttings in 2.5 inch pots for $2 all the way to larger plants in 8 inch or larger pots for over $20

b grade plants

When you think of B Grade, think of SAVINGS! You’ll notice that we may sell plants labeled as “B Grade” that have discounted prices. Overall, this means that these plants, while still being healthy and promising enough to be sold, are not as pretty or established as our regular stock. The most common reason why we would label our plants as B Grade would be due to the plant being recently transplanted out of the ground either from plant beds or local wild environments that our nursery uses. Due to this fact, these plants’ roots haven’t had the time to be as well-established as our regular stocked plants. However, we are skilled at delicately transplanting plants out of the ground with their root systems maximumly intact. We even snap pictures often of the roots of recently transplanted plants, in order to be as transparent as possible regarding what our customers are buying. Two examples of these pictures are shown here.

The other most common reason we would sell a plant to you as B Grade would be due to its appearance above the dirt, like if it’s not as full, straight, or pretty as our normal plants. For example, sometimes some of our potted trees are observed to not have straight trunks and good foliage. We could decide either to nurse these along for a long time until they straighten and fill out, or instead we could sell them immediately as B Grade at a discounted price. There could come a customer that wants to plant a large quantity of small native trees in a rugged corner of their property, and this tree’s uglier appearance would not be a concern to him or her as much as saving money.

Think of an overstock store, a “dented packaging” store, or an e-commerce return shop, to get accurate comparisons of our B Grade plants. The products you buy with huge price discounts at these stores all have a problem or two with them, but these problems do not inhibit the product’s functionality and are usually aesthetic in nature.
